With Hurricane Milton approaching, we would like to share with you Vista’s hurricane preparedness list. Vista’s offices will be closed Wednesday 10/9 from 12:00pm and Thursday 10/10 with plans to reopen on Friday morning, contingent upon weather and travel conditions.

As Hurricane Milton sets its sights on the West Coast of Florida, preparation should be the course of action.

Some suggested actions in advance of a potential storm include the following:

STAY INFORMED  Keep abreast of the latest storm track through television news or the National Hurricane Center’s website.

WATCH for Tropical Storm or Hurricane Watches or Warnings.

BE AWARE of Evacuation Orders, and familiarize yourself with evacuation routes.

LEARN the locations of shelters should you need to go to one.

PLAN AHEAD Ensure that your vehicle has adequate gas or power, should evacuation orders be issued.  Please bring inside any outdoor patio / balcony / yard objects that may become projectiles during periods of high wind.

Make sure you have adequate supplies (non-perishable foods, water, ice, batteries, medicines, etc.).

Keep in mind the specific needs of children, seniors, and pets and be prepared with supplies.

Keep your cellular phone charged and have a battery-operated weather radio on hand.

Prepare your home to reduce any damage – close or install hurricane shutters, and secure anything on your property that may be blown around in the storm.

Secure valuables and important documents.

Check to ensure that your generator is in good working condition.

Take photographs and videos of your property to document pre-storm condition.

Important Websites:

Go over your emergency plan with your family.

Make sure there’s nothing that could blow around during the storm and damage your home or your neighbors.

Move bikes, flower pots, lawn furniture, grills, propane tanks, and building material inside or under shelter.

With high forecasted winds, securing these items indoors could prevent damage to your home or a neighbor's home.

If you live in a condominium or townhome association, please be sure to bring in all items on your balcony or patio.

Fill clean water containers with drinking water. You’ll want to do this in case you lose your water supply during the storm. You can also fill up your sinks and bathtubs with water for washing.

Put pets in a safe place. Read more about pet safety during an emergency.

Stay inside. Even if it looks calm, don’t go outside.

Wait until you hear or see an official message that the hurricane is over. Sometimes, weather gets calm in the middle of a storm but then quickly gets bad again.

With heavy rains expected, if you have a private pool consult your service provider regarding lowering the water level to prevent overflowing. Do not drain past the bottom of the skimmer and do not drain the pool completely as an empty pool is subject to floating or popping out of the ground due to lift pressure.

Be ready to turn off your power. If you see flooding, downed power lines, or you have to leave your home, switch your power off.

Stay away from windows—you could get hurt by pieces of broken glass or flying debris during a storm. Stay in a room with no windows, or go inside a closet.

We hope you and your family are safe and should you have any questions, please let us know.

Thank you and please stay safe!
